They could have done a lot more to make these moments enjoyable. Finally, there are some sections that are simply lame such as the kart racing part against the Clown Racers. It's also tricky to line jumps up, especially in dimly-lit levels and falling down as a result of not being able to clearly see your shadow is quite irritating. Considering it's a mostly easygoing game, annoying parts like the boss fight with Anubis really stand out. For starters, the difficulty is all over the map as some bosses are much harder than others and even certain level segments can be super-frustrating. 😊 Some ghostly aspectsĪlthough the gameplay of working past tricky platforming segments, dealing with pesky enemies, and collecting fruit then backtracking to open doors is highly entertaining stuff, Pac-Man World Re-Pac definitely has its issues. Overall, there's a lot to do and achieving everything is certainly enjoyable. Your save file even has a high score total so you can compare with friends if you really want to. Plus, each level has a high score to beat even though there are no online leaderboards and you can also collect the letters PACMAN to unlock a bonus fruit-collecting level as well as try to achieve a gold crown on every stage by collecting everything. Speaking of which, you can also unlock the original Pac-Man which is awesome. The most enjoyable collectible are the unlockable mazes which play like the classic arcade Pac-Man. For starters, the stages take place within 6 distinct themed environments with my favourite being the funhouse area. On top of rescuing family members, Pac-Man World Re-Pac is bursting with collectibles. Your primary goal is to rescue 6 of Pac-Man's friends and finding the keys only to open their cages is rewarding stuff for sure. Meanwhile, the stage designs are elaborate as they feature multiple paths, hidden areas, and loads of reasons to backtrack.
The controls are tight and intuitive well, except for the hover-jump which should have been executed by simply holding the jump button. There are some advanced moves, too, such as being able to hover after a jump just like Yoshi does, butt-bounce which allows you to flatten most enemies as well as jump higher, and throw collected Pac-Dots which impressively utilizes the DualSense's adaptive triggers and haptic feedback to add immersion. Playing Pac-Man World Re-Pac simply involves running, jumping, and charge-dashing around stages. 🎵 These mazes are much easier than they are in the arcade original Fun 3D platforming No matter how you slice it, this is one cheerful game and its upbeat music will get stuck in your head for days.
I also love the new opening cinematic where Pac-Man's friends and family get kidnapped at his birthday party as it's much sillier than the original's but I can understand some folks not liking the change. Sure, the graphics aren't as good as most modern 3D platformers but it's certainly cute such as how Pac-Man grows to be huge whenever he gobbles a Power Pellet.
Thankfully, Pac-Man World Re-Pac looks wonderful as it smoothes everything out with a much higher resolution and fluid animation that really breathes new life into the original's colourful aesthetic. Playing the original Pac-Man World nowadays may be a fun throwback but its visuals are definitely grainy and tough to appreciate. Now that it has been remade thanks to Pac-Man World Re-Pac, I thoroughly enjoyed replaying this classic with a graphical overhaul and many minor changes in place. Of course, when the game actually released, I snagged a copy and had a blast playing through it. I first played it on a demo disc and as an existing Pac-Man fan, I was blown away by the 3D visuals and gameplay that somewhat reminded me of another favourite of mine: Crash Bandicoot.
